The Folkhälsan Research Center has two research programs - Genetic Research and Public Health Research. The goal of the program for genetic research is to produce knowledge about how both genetic and environmental factors influence the mechanisms of disease emergence. The program for public health research includes research on health promotion among children and adolecents, healthy aging and hormone metabolism.

– Despite the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic still affected us in many different ways, it is gratifying that we were able to continue our work actively and productively in 2021 with approx. 300 scientific publications and ten doctoral dissertations that were completed. In addition, several important decisions were made regarding the research center's organization and four new group leaders were appointed in 2021, says Anna-Elina Lehesjoki, research director at FHRC.

The Folkhälsan Research Center employed circa 200 people in 2021. The research funding managed at Folkhälsan was EUR 8.4 million euro in 2021, of which external funding accounted for 40 percent.
